First Grade Class

Welcome to our wonderful first grade class in room 1!  Ms. Adams has taught first grade at West Portal for 20 years.  She has been assisted by student teachers, student observers and terrific parents during that time.  Children here learn some sign language and over 20 ways to say "good morning" all over the world.  Our curriculum is thematic, based on the Houghton Mifflin reading program and current State Standards.  Children learn in an innovative, hands-on, print-rich environment where writing is part of every curriculum area.

PARENTS   Happy 2007 to everyone!  Our first graders are starting the year ready to learn.  We are continuing our fun, yet challanging, reading and math programs.  The homework will include a different but interesting book report.  We are finishing our rock and sand unit, making and writing about rock creatures and creating sand drawings.  The children will be asked to vote on a personal animal unit of study or a unit about the solar system.  We will also begin Writer's Workshop in the next few weeks; I will send home a "favorites" list for you and your child to fill out.  Report cards will go home at the end of the month. Thank you for remembering to return blue book bags on Mondays, library books on Thursdays and folders on Fridays.  May this be a wonderful year for all!  Much love!  Lynette Adams
