Weekly Updates: Archive

September 5, 2019 Updates

Principal Lee’s and Assistant Principal Ashton’s Corner:

  • Construction Meeting Tonight (Thursday). Come find out more about our West Portal Spring 2020 building construction. We will have beautiful new classrooms. Come learn more! Sign up for the September 5 meeting and reserve dinner and childcare. Please remember to bring your own reusable water bottle.

  • Back to School Night is September 12th at 6pm-7:30pm. Please come meet in the auditorium from 6pm-6:20pm for some whole school announcements. Then you’ll get a chance to go meet your child’s teacher and learn more about what to expect and look forward to this year!

  • English Language Development (ELD): ELD started on the first day of school and we are excited to see many students access the English language by receiving 30 minutes of ELD instruction each day. Please come to our ELAC meeting at 8:45am in Room 34 to learn more about how you can support your child.

  • Free Bus: The Free Muni Program provides low and moderate income San Francisco youth ages 5 to 18 FREE access to Muni services when using a Clipper card. https://www.sfmta.com/fares/free-muni-youth Please see if you qualify. This will also help with transportation during school field trips.

  • The YMCA: Is fully staffed and we have some new faces joining our afterschool community. Besides, Mr. Jackson Livingston (Program Director) families can also reach out to Ms. Sonia (Family Liaison) for assistance/scholarships.  Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Chinese tutoring started Aug 26th and will be available Mon, Wed, and Fri. Organized sports teams will begin in Oct.

  • GLO: Over the summer I have been trying to contact GLO to make sure they give our families their deposits back. Unfortunately, I was not successful in reaching them via phone or e-mail. Their office has closed down and I am unsure if they are still in business. It is incredibly frustrating and disheartening to hear that no families received their deposits back. I have the power to kick them out of the school and that’s what I did. If families have any collective ideas on how they’d like to move forward, please let me know. I will help in any capacity that I can. I’m confident that moving forward with a well-established program like The Y, would ensure that incidents will not occur in the future.

  • West Portal Park: will be closed starting 9/29 for construction. We look forward to a new play structure in the future.

  • Please follow me on Twitter or the West Portal School Website to see pictures of fun learning activities that are happening at school! Mrs. Ashton is also posting on her Twitter account!

August 22, 2019 Updates

Our school calendar has been updated for the whole year! Click on the + button at the bottom right of the school calendar to add it to your own.

Principal Lee’s Corner:

  • Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a wonderful summer! It’s so nice to see you all. Students are getting back into the swing of things and we look forward to a great year!

  • Volunteer Opportunity: Due to the San Francisco weather, most mornings leave a layer of heavy dew on the two slides in the yard 3 playground. In order to avoid very wet and dirty clothes from kids sliding down these wet slides, we need someone to volunteer to check them every morning after the bell and wipe them down. A squeegee and paper towels are provided, and it takes no longer than 15 minutes. If you are interested and can commit to this volunteering effort, please contact the school office.

  • Safety Contract: Please make sure you go over the safety contract, sign it, and return to your teacher. It is key that all students make it to school safely and families follow all safety rules to minimize accidents.

  • The YMCA: started on the first day of school. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Chinese tutoring will start Aug 26th and will be available Mon, Wed, and Fri. Organized sports teams will begin in Oct.
