Mrs. Ashton has shared the welcome message below with our community!
Hello! My name is Lauren Ashton, at school you can call me Mrs. Ashton, and I am thrilled to be joining West Portal Elementary School as your new Assistant Principal!
A little about my background:
I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I love learning! I am a recent graduate of the Principal Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley, earning a Masters in Educational Leadership and my Administrative Services Credential. I am coming from San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) where, most recently, I worked as both the Site Supervisor of the Early Childhood Education Inclusion Program and as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) Assistant Principal. During my time at SRVUSD I had the privilege of teaching Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Second Grade, and Fourth Grade. Meanwhile, I studied at UC Berkeley in their Cornerstone Teacher Leadership program; a program designed specifically for teacher leaders interested in improving their ability to engage colleagues and key stakeholders. Before becoming a teacher I was a Graduate student at Mills College where I had the opportunity to work in many classrooms throughout the Oakland Unified School District, both as a teacher, in a Fifth/Sixth grade combination class, and educational researcher. After graduating Mills with a Bachelors in Child Development, a Masters in Education, and a Multiple Subject Teacher Credential I began my teaching career. At present, I’m working towards a Certificate in Early Childhood Educational Leadership through Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Like I said, I love learning!
On a personal note:
I was born in San Diego, but moved to the East Bay when I was young. The Bay Area is definitely my home! My husband and I currently live in Walnut Creek, very near to our families. I come from a large family and I’m sure you’ll hear me talk about them often! I’m a Registered Yoga Teacher and enjoy yoga, the theater, and the outdoors. Before entering Education, I was actually a professional Ballet Dancer. I trained with San Francisco Ballet and The Princess Grace Academy in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. The visual and performing arts are what made going to school worth it for me. Arts education is a huge passion of mine and I am excited that West Portal Elementary School values the arts and extracurriculars equally amongst reading, writing, math and science.
My professional values & vision:
I am an energetic leader and am excited about continuing the great work already in progress at West Portal Elementary School! West Portal believes that collaboration among all stakeholders is essential and I am a relationship-based leader who prefers to work together to continue to build upon West Portal’s vision and plan. Much like the West Portal community, I strongly believe in the success of all students and will use my background to foster rigorous curriculum in classrooms where students feel safe, challenged, and engaged. I am committed to nurturing our community by encouraging open communication through which teachers, parents, and student peers work together to achieve collaborative success for all students.
I look forward to meeting everyone! Please reach out to me at anytime!
