Dear West Portal Families,
My name is Karen (Kay) Lee and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the principal of West Portal Elementary School. I’m having a wonderful time collaborating with the WP Community and look forward to meeting more students, staff, and families!
A little about myself: I have worked in education for a little over a decade. I have taught 1st-7th grade and have worked at international schools in Shanghai, China and Puebla, Mexico. I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish. I also graduated from UC Berkeley’s Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) and am honored to take on an administrative position here at West Portal. Prior to coming to West Portal, I was an Assistant Principal at Carver Elementary in the Bayview. Before that role, I was an Instructional Reform Facilitator at Sheridan Elementary. I value an inclusive and welcoming environment, building strong relationships with students, teachers, and the community and working together as a team.
Recently, West Portal staff and community members edited our mission. We are proud to translate it into different languages and make it visible at school, so everyday we can be reminded of our goal.
Our mission is to use current research-driven practices to collaboratively create a kind, caring, and inclusive learning community where every student approaches challenges with a growth mindset, independence is fostered, social-emotional development and teamwork are valued, and learning is student-centered, joyful, and equitable for all.
In addition to working toward reaching our mission, my priority this year is to continue to listen, learn, and collaborate with your child and our families – one of our most important partners. Thanks in advance for your support and I look forward to another wonderful year!
Karen (Kay) Lee, Principal
