It’s hard to imagine it’s already that time of year – time to start a new school year! I’ve always found the dawn of a new school year as an exciting and inspiring time, one full of new beginnings. I’m hopeful that all of you have had an opportunity to unplug and recharge this summer and are feeling ready to jump back in, come Monday morning.
I’ve been amazed at how hard our teachers and support staff have been working trying to get their rooms ready for their new charges. After attending an inspiring professional development this past week, I watched in amazement as many teachers dove into restructuring their libraries and setting up classroom environments to promote independence and engagement with our students. I continue to feel so lucky to be a part of such a stellar group of educators.
Not only have the teachers been busy at work our custodial staff has also been working non-stop ensuring we have a clean and safe building for our students and families.
One big “new beginning” for all of us here at West Portal is going to be a shift from monthly assemblies to weekly assembly. We will still have our one extended birthday celebration assembly the first Friday of each month, but the other Fridays we will meet for a brief 5 minutes to be in community with one another and share highlights from the fantastic learning going on in our school. The goal is to have all our assemblies translated in Cantonese so we can make this more accessible to many of our families. All assemblies will take place on Yard 4. Students will need to line up in their class meeting area right as the bell rings. Teachers will meet classes on the yard.
Please remember my office door is always open. I look forward to reconnecting with many of you and meeting all our new families.
Cheers to a healthy and fruitful start of the 2015-2016 school year.
