The annual Read-a-Thon is coming your way! This event encourages your child’s love of reading while raising vital funds for our school. West Portal families support important enrichment programs for our students, including outdoor science, library, and music (to name only a few). This is one of only 3 fundraising events that we have at West Portal. Your support and involvement is critical.
Last year, our students read a total of 202,589 minutes (over 3,376 hours, or 141 days), and raised a record amount of funds for West Portal School! Let's break the record this year!!
The Read-a-Thon runs November 12 – November 30. Students will receive their reading logs and instructions from their teachers in their Thursday folders on November 12, and they will have until November 30 to READ READ READ!
How does it work?
Students record in a log the number of minutes they read or are read to during the Read-A-Thon period. Parents, friends, family and corporations make pledges that directly support West Portal school programs. All contributions are tax deductible and eligible for matching grants from participating companies.
We encourage all students to read, read, read, even if they don’t collect pledges.
All students, even those too young to read. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, and friends can read to small children and record the pages for them.
What kinds of materials count?
Students can read anything: novels, textbooks, journals, magazine articles, newspapers. Our goal is to get everyone reading!
Read-A-Thon fosters positive reading habits, promotes literacy and financially supports our school’s vital enrichment programs such as the library, the outdoor science classroom, music, technology, and so much more.
We'll have fun prizes for the top individuals and classrooms that read the most minutes and raise the most funds! Details about the prizes will be announced soon.
