Word surgery, what’s that? And how can 1st graders be surgeons already?
Well, that’s exactly what they were – surgeons - in one of our first grade classrooms last week! The students donned surgical gloves and masks and took out their scissors to conduct surgery on words like can and not, would and not, he and is, etc. The idea was to cut out the unused letter for the contraction and “tape” the new contraction back together with a Band-Aid in place of an apostrophe. “Ahh…my patient died!” cried one of the first graders as he noticed he’d cut out the wrong letters. What a fun and engaging way to learn about how to make contractions! Way to go 1st graders!
