About West Portal Elementary School
West Portal Elementary is a San Francisco public school with a proud tradition of academic excellence in both our General Education Program and our Chinese Immersion Program, the very first such program in the nation. Our community is diverse and dynamic and unified and inclusive. We're a big school with a small school feel.
Our mission is to:
Use current research-driven practices to collaboratively create a kind, caring, and inclusive learning community.
Ensure every student approaches challenges with a growth mindset and has a strong social-emotional foundation.
Provide learning that is student-centered, joyful, and equitable for all.
Our school hours are 8:40am - 2:30pm (K-3) and 8:40am - 2:40pm (4-5).
School tours take place most Thursdays, 9-10am, October - January.
West Portal Elementary is one of the largest K-5 schools in San Francisco. Our campus sits atop a hill on a tree lined street in the West Portal/Forest Hill neighborhood. Our curriculum emphasizes academic excellence and offers a rich arts education. We are both a strong general education program (with attendance area) and a city wide dual immersion Cantonese program. We have a long tradition of excellence, and a proud history of serving each member of our culturally diverse community. Our talented, energetic teachers challenge students to reach high academic standards and inspire a lifelong love of learning. Our large and successful full Inclusion Program for students with special needs is another source of pride. The active Parent Club supports the school through community building, fundraising, and supporting the goals of the school and SFUSD. We have a fun, fabulous, and engaged community, and we look forward to welcoming you!
